Every year, the Muslim community seems to get into the same fight: what is the correct day for Eid? It seems absurd that Muslims who live in the same country, same town, same street, or even same household, cannot agree on which day they should celebrate Islamic festivals. This has caused division and immense pain in the Muslim community.
Is there a solution?
To begin a public conversation on this issue, and to discuss ways forward, the New Crescent Society and the Royal Observatory Greenwich will be hosting the inaugural National Hilal Conference.
This conference will bring together imams, community leaders, mosque committee members, scientists, astronomers and educators, hoping to find a route to community consensus in the years to come.
This event promises to be a landmark event for the Muslim community in the UK. This day will include:
A Ramadan special planetarium show, delivered by the astronomers at the Royal Observatory Greenwich
Conference session discussing issues around the Islamic calendar, visibility of the moon, different Islamic positions, reasons behind split Eid dates and the dates for the upcoming Ramadan 1440AH / 2019
A discussion forum bringing together community leaders and imams seeking a way forward – is a united Eid date possible in the UK?
